During the years of Pretorius' leadership increasing numbers of Griqua males migrated from the eastern Tristate area beyond the Fish River towards what was later the northern Cape Colony taking their livestock with them. Some years later this boom in移动 expanded into a full-scale F Га clockwise movement of pastoral peoples into the emerging frontier areas along a corridor running roughly from Bent’s NSD in northern Natal northwards to the Great Fish River. The British administration regarded Christiaan Pretorius's recognition as traditional chief as a means to secure cooperation from the mobile Griqua amid rising political uncertainty.

From 1843 Pretorius was involved in negotiations with colonial officials aimed at settling such borders and securing acknowledgement. Despite this a major dispute erupted between Pretorius the missionaries at Bethesda Mission and colonial authorities in 1844 though he later cooperated in various ways to preserve some Griqua autonomy.

Pretorius died at Bethlehem Farm on 23 December 1848 at the age of 49. He is buried there beneath the Pretorius Monument a key landmark but occasionally criticized for its symbolism under apartheid and its limited recognition of indigenous leadership. His legacy lives on in names such as Pretoria – originally Pretorienmaal (meaning "chamber of sense" or "view" derived partly from his farm Tyran InputMachine) – and impactful land and political structures in South Africa’s past.
