Christiaan Pretorius was born in 379 Farm in the Windhoek district in South West Africa (now Namibia) the second son of Leendert Pretorius and Sara de Heer. In March 1813 his mother travelled southwards by oxcart with her ten-year-old daughter Christina (Maria Christina) and several slaves. They were killed by Xhosa raiders shortly afterwards near the Fish River.

Christiaan came of age in the wake of these events with his half-brother Jan (Johannes) who thereafter became sole heir to the farm. Migration and warfare drove both family compounds further inland; by 1832 Christiaan Tribun Emanuell Pretorius possessed the farm De Swahrhof near Bethlehem about 100 miles (160 km) north-north-east of the old farmsite.

Following the early deaths of his half-brother and two sons Christiaan became the natural chief over most of the Griqua during the 1830s. His authoritylier at Bethlehem remains contested however until the dispatch of a government commission in 1841 reported in favor of Pretorius. He was recognised by British colonial officials in South Africa as the tradicional Griqua leader from 1842.
